Done with the slopes? Here are the best alternative ways to spend time at California's most iconic ski resort

January 2025

Written By Sam Rainsbury

24 lifts, 178 trails, and 300 days of sunshine – Mammoth Lakes is a west coast wonderland like no other. But the fun doesn’t have to stop at the bottom of the slopes. There are plenty of things to do in Mammoth Lakes that are just as exciting as the skiing and snowboarding. So, if you want to take your trip to new heights, these are the five things you need to try.

1. Slide Through LA Kings Ice Rink

The LA Kings Ice rink is one of Mammoth Lakes’ coolest places. Pun intended. Located in the Community Recreation Centre (CRC), this is the only Olympic-sized indoor rink in the Eastern Sierra. Open daily from October to April, you can take part in everything from public skate sessions to beginner curling lessons and hockey league try-outs. So, whether you’re sharpening your skills or tiptoeing round in rented skates, this is a must-visit stop on the Mammoth map. There’s even a free shuttle from the Main Lodge and The Village that drops you off near the rink.

2. Roll by Mammoth Rock ‘N’ Bowl

There’s no better backdrop for bowling a strike than the Sherwin Mountain range. Niche, but true. This buzzing 12-lane alley is named after its iconic overlook of Mammoth Rockand it’s pimped out with state-of-the-art scoring systems and TVs showing your favourite sports. And for the foodies, you’re in luck. Not only is there lane-side catering, but above the alley is Mammoth Rock Brasserie, the venue’s fine dining restaurant. With locally sourced food and unreal upscale options, you won’t believe you’re having your best meal in a bowling alley… Plus, win or lose, there’s a full bar with your name on it. As if that’s not enough, you’ve got foosball, darts, ping pong, and three indoor golf simulators to choose from. Spoilt, much? If you want an unreal evening, you’ll find it here.

3. Escape to Double Eagle Spa

Just because you’re on a skiing trip, doesn’t mean you have to move at 100mph. You’re allowed to take some time out. At Double Eagle Spa, it’d be rude not to. Located in Mammoth Lakes’ Snowcreek Athletic Club, the Spa is your go-to for all things health and wellness. With everything from luxury facials and treatments to full-body massages, you’ll be wanting to sneak away from the slopes more often. For those interested, a Super Spa membership can unlock cheaper rates, giving you the full Snowcreek experience, including a modern gym, countless fitness classes, and a 57ft heated indoor pool. It doesn’t get much better than that.

4. Hit Up Yosemite Axe Throwing

If you’re looking to chop something off your bucket list, this is the place to do it. Yosemite Axe Throwing is the only company of its kind in the world that uses 100% reclaimed trees for its targets. This means they repurpose timber that’s already been lost to drought, storm, damage, wildfire, or bark beetle, for use in their venue. Pretty cool, right? Not only are you making the most out of this otherwise wasted resource, but you can finally flex your red checkered shirt in its natural habitat. What’s not to love? Learn from the pros what it takes to hit a bullseye and compete with your pals in exclusive games. For those with a competitive streak, you already know this is for you.

5. Refuel in Mammoth Coffee Roasting Co.

You’re probably exhausted just by reading this list, but don’t worry. We have the perfect spot for you to take the weight off Mammoth Coffee Roasting Co. Founded in 2017, this local café is your one-stop-shop for a cup of coffee and a slice of relaxation – and a homemade doughnut or two. With both made-to-order and grab-to-go options, there’s no excuse not to stop by this absolute gem on your way up (or down) the slopes. If you want in on the really good stuff, drop by on a Sunday when they serve their famous cinnamon rolls. Be warned, they sell out fast, so get there early – we promise it’ll be worth it. Whatever you do, save some space for this bad boy in your Mammoth itinerary.

There you have it, our top five alternative things to do in Mammoth Lakes. No matter how ski savvy you are, this resort does not disappoint. If you want to hit the slopes this season, make sure you factor in a little detour to some of these tried-and-true favourites, as well.
