Views for Centuries
Originally founded as a port city, Alexandria’s Potomac River is more than an al fresco cocktail spot (though it is that, too). Take a stroll round the waterfront for a look at the landscape that’s served generations of local workers. If you’re feeling brave, head to the dock for a floating visitor experience on the Providence, a replica of the first ship commissioned to the Continental Navy. This immersive one-hour dockside tour is led by Captain John Paul Jones, and you’re his sailor. After that, you’ll probably need some grub, so you might as well check out the catch of the day. Vola’s Dockside Grill serves up fresh shucked oysters, crab cakes and steamer pails, whilst BARCA Pier & Wine Bar is a great pick for a vino or two.

A Place to Reflect
Another huge part of Alexandria’s history is its deep-rooted ties to the African American community. Through history, this town was a safe haven for freedom seekers and, by 1850, it was the only locality in Virginia to have more free black people than enslaved. When you visit, you’ll discover plenty of reminders of the stark history that’s shaped America, and plenty of opportunities to reflect on it, too. Manumission Tour Company holds guided tours of the Underground Railroad, and you can visit a range of special sites, like the Freedom House Museum or the African American Heritage Park.

Iconic Aesthetics
Owing to its historic legacy, it’s no wonder a lot of Alexandria’s architecture has remained unchanged for centuries. Once you’ve seen some of these impressive builds, you won’t be mad at it. A great place to start is King Street mile. This is a retail hotspot of over 200 boutiques and restaurants, many of which are in their original 18th- and 19th-century buildings. Did someone say, unreal spot for a selfie? There’s also Spite House, America’s skinniest historic house, and the charming cobblestoned Captain’s Row. These are great places for getting your steps in, as well as copping a bargain or two.

No matter where you look, Alexandria’s history is looking back at you. With an incredible maritime culture, strong community ties, and picturesque streets, this spot deserves a place on every traveller’s bucket list.
